2027: Nigeria recovered democracy from ashes of broken PDP – Udenta

Founding National Secretary of the Alliance for Democracy, Prof Udenta O. Udenta, says Nigeria has recovered multi-party democracy from the collapse of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Udenta spoke on Tuesday while fielding questions in an interview on Arise Television's 'Prime Time'.

He noted that the PDP that once dominated Nigeria's political space has broken down, adding that from its ashes, a new multi-party democracy has emerged.

According to him, the development is a positive sign for Nigeria's democracy, stressing that no single party can claim absolute control of the political landscape.

Udenta further asserted that the emergence of strong opposition forces, including the African Democratic Congress, ADC, is proof that Nigeria's political space is now more competitive.

He warned the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, against attempting to force Nigeria into a one-party state, insisting that the country's diverse nature will not allow it.

"The era where one party dominates everything is gone. Out of the ashes of a broken PDP, we have recovered multi-party democracy," Udenta said.

He added that what Nigeria needed was to protect the new multi-party system and ensure that the 2027 election does not destroy the unity of the country.

Udenta proposed that political leaders should form a sovereign commission that will sustain democracy regardless of who wins the election.
