Five arraigned over assault on policemen in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned five suspects before the Ota Magistrate Court following an alleged attack on police officers performing their lawful duties in Ota, Ogun State.

According to a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Wednesday by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the incident occurred around The Bells area, Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, on October 2, 2026.

The command said, “The incident occurred when a police patrol team intercepted and arrested a suspect found in possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

“While conveying the handcuffed suspect to the station, the officers were allegedly ambushed by a group of persons who attacked them with cutlasses, stones and bottles.”

According to the statement, the attack resulted in injuries to police personnel, damage to the operational vehicle and the escape of the suspect.

The command said it subsequently launched an intelligence-led operation, adding, that following immediate intelligence-led operations, “the Ogun State Police Command arrested five suspects: Morenikeji Badmus, 36; Adedoja Segun, 40; Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride, 49; Mike Stephen, 28; and David Odeh, 32.”

The suspects were arraigned on charges bordering on conspiracy, serious assault on police officers, obstruction of lawful duty and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

The police said, “Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects.”

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, said, “The safety of police officers performing lawful duties remains a priority of the Command.”

He added, “Members of the public are urged to refrain from physical confrontation with law enforcement personnel and channel grievances through established lawful channels.”
